GEOFFROY WHEN EVERYTHING IS GONE

The diversity of this tiny planet we call Earth never fails to surprise and captivate. A universal curiosity which is enriched by TV, film and other forms of media that shine spotlights on cultures and communities far removed from our own. It was one such National Geographic episode about the Brazilian religious group, Vale do Amanhecer,  that director Didier Charette and musician Geoffroy watched together. They were instantly intrigued by this community who believe that extraterrestrials are hidden inside human bodies. The video you see below was initially shot as a documentary/short film, although Charette ultimately found that the energy he experienced when spending time with the community synchronised with that of Geoffroy's music. The track selected to accompany the visuals was ‘When Everything Is Gone’, taken from the Canadian artist’s recently released album 1952. It’s a sultry groove of cosmic synths and shuffling percussion. The warm, airy textures throughout connect perfectly with Charrette’s mini-documentary. Moreover, Geoffrey’s vocals give the sense that he’s not letting his emotions go full throttle, but instead he keeps a little back. We only have to look to the lyrics to discover why his cards are played close to his chest: “It might be best for you, / It might be best, keep your distance now, / I’m only trouble, I care for my own heart, / Care enough, now I’m back at the start.” For more emotional salve, check out Geoffroy’s full album wherever you listen to music. - Hannah Thacker
